The Speckled Beauty: A Dog and His People Customer Reviews

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Required reading for all human beings : I don't write reviews. Ok one time I did write I LOVE THIS BOOK about a goth lesbian sci-fi book but that was understandable, because I mean, who wouldn't?. I also loved this book, not just because I love Rick Bragg's writing, that I'm Southern, that dogs have looked after me since I was a painfully shy child, and not just because my two horrible untrainable Aussies neatly tore off the bottom half of the living room curtains so they could watch for my husband to come home from the hospice. Because it's beautifully written with humor and insight, because I love the descriptions of his mother and brother who remind me so much of my grandmother and uncles, because it celebrates the absolute messiness and joy and uniqueness of each and every dog. And just because dogs don't live as long as humans does NOT mean they always have to die at the end. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pennie M. Wolfe -- Rick Bragg Does It Again : There’s nothing to dislike about this wonderful book about an old stray that adopted the Bragg family. I bought it yesterday and stayed up all night reading it. I laughed and cried and kept a grin so big my jaws hurt. Rick, thanks again for another great one. I’m looking forward to your next. P.S~ give your sweet mama a hug from one of your biggest fans. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- great book : I read it in just a few hours. It’s poignant, yet laugh out loud funny. Perfect book for the times we’re living in now. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bette Barnett -- Every good human needs a bad dog : My dog Louie, like Speck, is a bad dog. He growls, eats furniture and rugs, hates cats, rolls in all kinds of stink and generally makes my life hell. But this book taught me that “In a time when the days seem twice as long and the whole world drags, could it hurt to go out and find every awful, hopeless dog on every dirty street and desolate country road, and give them a home.” ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Koren -- Favorite Author : Rick Bragg is one of the few authors that I will pre-order his books as soon as I hear he has a new one coming. I love his easy, lyrical way of writing and will at some point get all of his books in audio format just to hear his voice. While I don't think this will be my favorite book by him, it still warms my heart for the love he has for this poor, stray dog that he took under his wing. Few people would adopt such a dog, let alone fall in love with it and I love that (spoiler alert!) the dog does not die in the end. I was also set for the brother to die but I was glad he didn't. One thing I kept wondering about through the entire book was what happened to his wife and step-son. In the book he is living with his mother. He previously published a book that was entirely about his relationship with his step-son and there is no mention of him in this book. Kind of curious about that. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Molly Kewl -- Another Wonderful Book : I have every book Mr. Bragg has written and have been a huge fan since All Over. Because his Alabama people are so much like my Alabama people, I feel a kinship and understand and take great comfort in his writing. The Speckled Beauty is absolutely wonderful and another treasured book on my Bragg bookshelf. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan S. -- My favorite writer : I'm sad to finish this book. I loved it. I laughed, I cried. I really want a bad dog in my life. Well I'd settle for a good dog. Please Rick, keep writing. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Windbreaker -- You might need a certain perspective : I grew up in the rural south much the same way Bragg describes his family history and friends. So I understood right away things he wrote about. If you have a different life experience, you may have to reread a paragraph or two to get not just the words, but the sense he is giving to an event or even a conversation. You will still enjoy the book, especially if you love dogs and have a feeling for those that have been discarded and given a second chance. This book is an easy read that blends humor and life's disappointments in a good way. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021 )
