:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Shirley Y. Thomas -- Slow down and savor the prose : The book is only 161 pages long, and yet it took me a few days to read it. With formal, stately language using arcane terms such as myrmidons, oubliettes, cynosure, discoursive and latitudinarian, the going was a little slow. But the underlying story is fascinating, the characters vividly drawn. The soft, romantic ending was a mild surprise. The book made a nice change of pace from my usual rapid fire mystery reading. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dharma -- The 20's Roar, with Crime and Romance : Sir Francis Ledsam is a brilliant barrister, whose clientele is mainly of the criminal class. He successfully defends Oliver Hilditch from a charge of murdering his business partner. Shortly after the conclusion of the trial, Hilditch's wife, the beautiful Margaret, tells Ledsam that Hilditch, in fact, is an evil killer. Hilditch invites the lawyer home to dinner where he proceeds to demonstrate how he accomplished the murder. Later that evening, Hilditch is murdered in the same manner, presumably by his wife. It has everything; mystery, romance, crime, intrigue, wonderful yet concise descriptions, and a solid, satisfying conclusion. It's also an excellent look at a certain time in history when some wealthy women kept their cocaine on their dressing tables and many people owned automobiles. I had the feeling that this book was "toned down" somewhat from then book the author would have written in order to make it palatable to his audience. It basically is about a barrister who wins an acquittal for a guilty client and undergoes a crisis of conscience while falling in love with his former client's wife. The style of writing is much different, as are the customs and the characters. I prefer today's faster paced stories, but this is an interesting change of pace. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ron Stephens -- Left in doubt until the end : You will have to decide for yourself. Is all that is legal also right? Is all that is right also legal? Who is just what they appear to be and who is not? This is an almost-great read, lacking only the grip on the reader's emotions that make them care greatly how things will turn out.
