  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Book Worm -- The Ending! : I have read and enjoyed most of Donna Leon's novels. But I am sad to say this latest novel made me feel the author is bored with writing, living in Venice, her hero and even the food of Italy. She used to write with such enthusiasm about the families long lunches and dinners. A really interesting and important story line was lazily stuffed into the last third of the novel and not given the attention and research it deserved. And the ending, talk about abrupt I thought I was missing the last chapter. How can an experienced writer and her editor leave the reader not wanting more but wondering where the final pages are! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from alexander D -- Another very readable , Dona Leon story : Amazing that this author can tell a complicated tale so readable, Brunetti and family , inspire a decency amid all sorts of dark deeds . ( Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from skh62 -- Wonderful Brunetti : Leon has returned, a good story. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anthony Deascenti -- Delivered on time in good condition. : Read ( Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Helen19 -- A great return to form! : I've skipped the last two or three Brunettis, finding them formulaic and slightly tired. I was even beginning to think it was time to retire him; however, this is an excellent entry in the series and I may well now go back to the ones I missed. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Ruth Mayer -- So disappointing : I never ever thought the day would come when I would criticise Donna Leon. I have all of her books and love them all. Except this one! The first half looks like a filler, full of references to the Classics, a total non sequitur. The last part on the water with the Costiera is really gripping and unputdownable BUT I cannot believe a Commissario of the Police in Venice would be unfamiliar with the workings of a contemporary patrol boat, nor that he was wearing his wife's scarf or that he was so surplus to the operation. The abrupt ending leaving everything in the air is heart stopping after all the excitement of the race. Was Donna Leon too ill to finish the book? Why are we left high and dry with empty pages? So sad, disappointed, furious that Leon could do this to her loyal readers. Will there ever be another Brunetti? And where were the other stars of the Questura? Patta, Electra, Vianello? So sad to say think Ms Leon has lost the plot, as have we, poor readers! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from E Evans -- Dithered between three and a half and four stars - but will read the next one : What starts out as an unfortunate boating accident leads Brunetti into a much darker case which is difficult to explain without giving away the plot. However the book once again features Brunetti collaborating with Commissario Claudia Griffoni, who encounters, in this investigation, a fellow officer from her own Naples area. And it’s interesting to discover yet again how much the Northern Italians dislike and distrust those from the South. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 30, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Simon A. Whittam -- Brunetti Back and Better than ever! : Perhaps the last twelve months of lockdown had a little to do with it but I relished every page of this new story from Donna Leon - both for the sense of place and the mesmorising story. Following the footsteps of Brunetti along the Zattere, across the water behind the Molino Stucky and into the lagoon, you could feel the sun on your face, the silence from traffic and sounds from the water. Reading the book I felt as if I had snuck in a weekend break to Venice and felt revived for doing so. But the book is so much more than Venice (often the star) as Leon leads us to question our perception of others, our prejudices and beliefs. She reveals the story slowly and plays with the reader's mind as facts are reassesed and characters we dislike early on prove to be the ones we remember with respect. So subtly does she paint her characters that we find ourselves eager for favourites to reappear, sometimes simply to know what Elettra is wearing today. As such it is a pleasure to read such beautifully crafted prose, and coupled with the progressing story - not to mention the sense of place - all goes to make one of my favourite books for some time. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from EH -- Bit of a let down I’m afraid. : Quite disappointing. When I thought about it there was no real story - not a patch on what the earlier books in the Brunetti series were like. Far too much concentration on his Ancient Greek writers that we could do without. Somehow the plot was lacking a lot and the ending - well I went back to read it again because I was sure I must have missed something. Unfortunately I hadn’t. So definitely not one of Leon’s finer works which really was a shame. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 7, 2021 )
